LAKE CHALA NATIONAL PARK

Lake Chala, also known as Lake Challa, is a stunning crater lake located on the border between Tanzania and Kenya, approximately 55 kilometers from Moshi and about 130 kilometers from Arusha. Formed around 250,000 years ago, this serene destination offers a unique blend of natural beauty, diverse wildlife, and cultural experiences.

Natural Features

  • Crater Lake: Lake Chala is a deep crater lake, reaching depths of up to 98 meters, making it one of the deepest inland water bodies in Africa.
  • Color Variations: Depending on the time of year, the lake's waters range in color from deep blue to turquoise and green, influenced by algae and mineral content.
  • Crater Rim: The lake is surrounded by a steep crater rim, rising up to 170 meters (560 feet), offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes.

Wildlife and Ecology

  • Endemic Species: Lake Chala is home to the critically endangered Lake Chala tilapia (Oreochromis hunteri), a species found nowhere else in the world.
  • Birdlife: The area boasts over 200 bird species, including raptors like peregrine falcons, making it a haven for birdwatchers
  • Other Wildlife: Visitors may encounter vervet monkeys, blue monkeys, baboons, bushbucks, dik-diks, and monitor lizards in the surrounding forests.

The dry seasons, from June to October and December to March, are ideal for visiting Lake Chala, offering pleasant weather for outdoor activities. However, the lake's beauty can be appreciated year-round, with each season providing a different perspective of its landscapes.
